for Attendance at the ANZIAM Conference, MISG and Special Interest Group Conferences

1 Introduction

The ANZIAM Travel Support Scheme is designed to provide funding to support conference travel and registration for students and early career members (ECMs) from institutions in Australia and New Zealand, who wish to attend the ANZIAM conference or those of the special interest groups. These are, specifically, the Maths in Industry Study Group (MISG), and the satellite meetings associated with the ANZIAM conference. The scheme was historically funded by annual sponsorship from CSIRO (2008-2017), and, up until 2026 was known as the ANZIAM Student Support Scheme.

The objectives of the ANZIAM Travel Support Scheme are: 

• To help students and ECMs attend conferences relevant to their interests.
• To emphasise the importance of students and ECMs giving presentations about their work.
• To provide a first step educating students and ECMs in ways of obtaining funding to help their research efforts. 

In order to be eligible for funding, students and ECMs will be required to present a talk at the conference, or in the case of MISG be an active participant in one of the Industry Projects. It is expected that students  (and ECMs where relevant) will have discussed their plans with their supervisors, and supervisor endorsement of applications is required. Only one event will be covered per member per year.

If students are not already members of ANZIAM, they must join at the time of making their application. ECMs need to have been members for at least one calendar year at the time of making their application. The committee may wish to give preference to students who have been members of ANZIAM themselves for at least one calendar year.

2 Background

ANZIAM believes that all research students and ECMs in applied mathematics should be encouraged to attend conferences and present their results on a regular basis. The benefits to both the award recipients and the applied mathematics community in general that derive from students and ECMs having the opportunity to receive feedback on their work and to network with both senior colleagues and their peers are invaluable.

The ANZIAM Travel Support Scheme has been designed to help students attend conferences and also to give them a relatively painless initial experience in making applications for funding.

The ANZIAM Student Support Scheme is based on the principle that applicants should develop a complete budget for their travel, registration and accommodation, and attempt to obtain partial funding from other sources. The ANZIAM Travel  Support Scheme will aim to provide partial funding, with the amount offered depending on the location the applicant is travelling from.

3 Budget and Operation of the Scheme

The ANZIAM Executive will allocate a budget to the scheme each year.

A panel of three ANZIAM members shall be constituted to make decisions on the applications. The panel will have discretion to make decisions on each application, taking into account the individual circumstances of the students involved. Overall the panel will be responsible for treating applications fairly according to the principles of the scheme and spreading the budget out equitably over each of the eligible conferences.

An expected maximum level of support will be calculated by the committee and publicised when applications to the scheme open. This level will take into account the conference registration fee, budget accommodation cost, estimated airfares from the applicant’s home airport, and whether the applicant is attending a satellite meeting in addition to the main conference. 

Additional funds for special circumstances, e.g., travelling with children, disability support, more expensive accommodation or more expensive flights due to time constraints and caring responsibilities, should be mentioned in your application and will be considered by the committee.

ANZIAM will only support one application per member annually.

ANZIAM funds are limited and the level of support will depend on the available budget and the number of applications received. Priority will be given to:

1. Applications that are received by the due date.
2. Student applications.
3. Applications from ECMs who are within five years of graduation.

Funding rounds will be publicised to ANZIAM members and will close 12 weeks prior to the opening day of the ANZIAM conference. For applications that are received by the due date, the committee will provide in writing confirmation of the grant at least one week prior to the early bird registration date for the conference, however payment of the grant will only occur following the conference. These dates also apply to applications for attendance at MISG. Attendance and presentation of a talk at the ANZIAM conference or attendance and active participation at MISG is required for payment of the grant.

Payment from the ANZIAM Travel Support Scheme will, wherever possible, be made to the applicant’s institution. Any direct payments to applicants will only be made in exceptional circumstances and will require relevant receipts to be provided. 

4 Application Procedure

All applications are to be made by completing this web form  before the application deadline. 

The online application form will require a single PDF of supporting evidence to be uploaded. The PDF should include:

1. Proof of ANZIAM membership. Students need to be members at the time of application, and ECMs need to have been members for at least one calendar year.
2. Alternative funding sources available to the applicant.
3. Declaration including statement of supervisor support (see link to "ANZIAM Travel ECM Support Application declaration).
